Will Any Idea Do?
I remember talking once to a superintendent of schools. He was retiring and, looking back over his long career in education, said there was nothing new going on in the field. Everything was just being repackaged and called something else. A truly new idea is a rare commodity indeed. So please do not suddenly expect such lightning to strike you here. Instead, with all modesty and humilty I offer these possible ideas for all of us to... (posted by George 57 days 18 hours ago.)

Let the Seduction Begin
A good read -- article, magazine, book -- is an exercise in the art of seduction. If done well, everyone gets what they want and goes away satisfied. The headline or title is the small smile on her face just as she turns away from you. It offers just enough enticement, just enough information to make you want more. You cannot turn away, you cannot move on until you find out if you saw what you think... (posted by George 63 days 3 hours ago.)

A Friend Is ....
When I was younger, a circle of six of us used to gather weekly to play cards, to talk, to bowl, just to be together. Those were my friends. I thought I would be close to them forever. Or at least as long as forever is to a teenager. Now, however, time has given me a perspective. Now I know that having one friend is a blessing. Having more than one is a miracle. That's because time sorts out those who... (posted by George 70 days 2 hours ago.)

Neither Label Fits
Growing up, my best friend was always a book. No one book, mind you, just whatever book I happened to be reading at the time. When you grow up in the country with three sisters and the nearest male your age is more than a mile away and you have no way to get to his house, then a book becomes a mighty trustworthy and able friend to have. It is always there when you need to escape the mundane, boring and... (posted by George 98 days 18 hours ago.)

Locked Behind Bars
The door slams shut, followed by the sound of the metal latch closing, locking me in for the night. As prisons go, this is not a bad one. There are regular meals, a relatively clean place to sleep, books and music and television and the curfew is late, but not too late. Of course, the warden has assigned me to the laundry and the kitchen and the yard crew, with a few sundry other tasks as needed. And I... (posted by George 106 days 19 hours ago.)

The Cost of Eavesdropping
Just one word. That was all it took. One solitary word. Spoken in close proximity to your name and you can make some assumptions, you can begin to see things happening. You can start to imagine a better life. Now admittedly, the word came crashing over the top of his cubicle with a rising tide of other office noise. And there was a small gap between the word and his name, the kind of gap that might have been a pause, or... (posted by George 113 days 7 hours ago.)
